Heikki Salonen’s Vyner Articles is a mouthpiece for his eclectic, burgeoning artist-cum-musician circle that operates in close proximity. Closeness, in both the creative and physical sense, is fundamental to Vyner, whose namesake derives from the artistic nucleus that is East End’s Vyner Street. Vyner necessitates collaboration, recruiting sound and print designers, photographers, stylists, and singers to leave their handprints on the seasonal backdrop of modest yet hard-wearing canvases, denims, and jersey knits. Chore coats and tasseled ‘karate’ trousers seem to pulse and radiate, solarized in lysergic tie-dye treatments, while riveted work shirts alternately sport paint splotches and unearthly Hawaiian-esque prints. Boxy tees are wrapped with sprawling watercolors that evoke movie posters, book covers, and album art—all equally intricate and ominous. And with no ends left untied, every collection of what Salonen portmanteaus “ArtWorkWear” is ethically produced with primarily organic materials, something seen not as bonus feature but as a contemporary creative imperative.
